Camp out!

Chase, Maggie and I did a pseudo camp out in the back yard last night. It was fun :)

Notes/observations

  • It takes a long time for it to get dark! Sunset was at 7:50pm, which meant that it only really got dark around 8:15pm. This is when we started to be able to see stars and planes.
  • The 3 of us lay in the tent shelter with the door zipped up and snuggled in our sleeping backs. We looked through the window and looked at the fire, the apple tree branches in the backyard, and planes as they flew by. "Maybe grandma and grandpa are in that plane?" said Chase. "We flew in a plane to VT." I responded, "We flew in a plane to Boston, and then took a bus to see grandma and grandpa." Chase responds, "Yea, and the pilots were Steve, like Simon's daddy, and Mark." That was 2 1/2 months ago.
  • When we were in the tent, Maggie and Chase started randomly commenting about the best parts of our camping night. "I really like the pillows. I like the tent." says Chase. "I really liked gathering up all of our camping stuff, and building the campfire." -Maggie
  • When we left the tent around 8:20, it was clear that just running around and playing outside in the dark is a thrilling new activity for the kids. They just reveled in the fact that it was dark.
  • The most frustrating part of the evening was that it was windy and the wood for our fire smoked a lot, so we were constantly battling and avoiding the smoke while sitting around the fire and while roasting marshmallows. The kids were not frustrated by this in the slightest. Good reminder that we don't need to be frustrated by things like this.
  • Chase started acting a bit delirious past 8pm, where he was silly and making even less sense than usual. "I don't care about the campfire. Yea, I don't care about the campfire."
We'll do this again!
