Restarting the blog, and blog structure

5 weeks into my non-adidas life, I've written 4 posts. One of those was just the completion of a previously drafted post about quitting my job, and two of them were just written/posted by me in the last 40 minutes.

Nearly every day in the last 5 weeks, I've thought or talked about posting, and have set some amorphous time in the future for when I really planned to dig in. The latest book that I'm reading "Better than before" digs deep into the psychology around procrastination and habits, and much of the content rings true with the behavior that I've exhibited around the blog.

There are many questions around when to start or stop a particular habit. Gretchen Rubin goes deep into the mind games people play on this, and puts forth a pretty simple answer. Start now. Stop now. Don't wait for "the perfect time" or even set some arbitrary time in the future. Even it is just a small step that you can take now, take it. The first step is often the hardest, and there is something very powerful about the smallest possible first step to get something moving. The human brain has a desire to continue something once it is started.

So, with that, I woke up and starting writing, er, blogging, this morning. I can now say that I have a blog where I've written a "handful" of posts since I've left my job, and I can also confidently say I've lowered the hurdle to future blog posts. Partly because the other two I wrote this morning were relatively short and dull. I'm sure I can come up with better content than THAT the next time a possible topic comes into my head.

Structure - Pretty basic, but I envision my posts falling into the following 8 categories, and will plan to label them as such. This one I'm calling "Habits & behaviors", and I suppose a post can have multiple labels.
  • Kids
  • Volunteering
  • Finance/frugality
  • Media - Books/movies/podcasts/quotes
  • Adventures & Travel
  • Fitness, diet and wellness
  • Habits & behaviors
  • Misc.
